Is bluegrass sung in swedish still bluegrass?

Well, to each one his/ her own, i guess, but we think so!

This interesting subject is dicussed by Nils Ahnland in his review of our CD "Tall & Gran" (Spruce & Pine, kind of ) in the latest issue of Lira Musikmagasin (Swedens premier magazine for roots, world and folkmusic).

All in all we got a good review, and that really makes us feel fine! It´s a good thing!

Here are some quotes (translated from swedish):

"Tall & Gran clearly shows that these musicians know their trade"

"What makes the Blue Mountain Boys stand out from just about all other bluegrass played in sweden (and the world) is their heavy use of swedish lyrics. This is a bold thing to do in a genre this conservative."

"Like many swedish bluegrassmusicians, these gentlemen are very skilled instrumentalists."

About the Songs

Idaho

Peter Roos wrote this number for his daughter, Ida.
We reached this songs speed limit one hot summer´s day, 2002 in Målilla, Småland County. We almost made it through the whole song!

En Man Som Är Sårad (Misery loves Company)

Peter Danielsson´s swedish adaptation of a Jerry Reed classic. Borrowed from the repertoire of the Johnson Mountain Boys (check them out!).
If your fellow man is down hearted and knee deep in the Blues, be a friend, it might have been you!

Black Eyed Susie

Suzie´s long, tall and independent! And she knows how to cut wood too! We really like her!

Where Joy Kills Sorrow

Fredrik Mårtenssons homage to the early days of radio.
Ah! the days of Martha White´s Flour Hour and The Grand Old Opry!
Bill Monroe was on WJKS´ payroll, Bill Monroe invented Bluegrass Music! Well done!

Cora Is Gone

A happy sounding Waltz about extreme heartache, heavy stuff! Flatt & Scruggs take on this one is pure magic, we borrowed some of it.

Åreskutans Topp (Foggy Mountain Top)

A Swedish Brother Duet about a mountain close to our town!

Springtime In Glory

This Gospel Gem speaks of a country of sunshine free from sorrow, pain and care, where no one grows old. Sounds like the place to be!

Virginia Darling

One of Bill Monroe’s hidden treasures, down to the point and fun to play. You just can´t get enough Twin Fiddle, in our opinion!

Rosenbad Blues (White House Blues)

Fredrik deals with swedish politicians, The Royal Family and the general state of the world in this one, and he´s not happy!
Charlie Poole was the first artist to record this song, this is the first swedish version!

Cryin´ My Heart Out Over You

A tear jerker if there ever was one!
The Blue Mountain Boys would like to thank Lester Flatt, Earl Scruggs and every Foggy Mountain Boy there´s ever been for the inspiration they give us!

Children, Go Where I Send Thee

We first heard this one with The Stanley Brothers, the undisputed Champions of Bluegrass Gospel!

Ants In My Hands

Not to be confused with James Brown´s old Soul-Funk-Hit! Peter Danielsson never ceases to amaze us when it comes to naming his tunes!

Hej Hej Bartender

Fredrik Mårtenssons swedish translation of Betty Sue Perry´s "Hey, Hey Bartender", We got it from one of Del McCourys early recordings.
We´d like to thank the Osborne Brothers for loaning us the harmonically advanced ending, thanks Bobby and Sonny!

Tall & Gran

Fredrik Mårtenssons swedish lyrics deals with the same things as the original "In The Pines", trains, trees, cold winds and broken Hearts.
Tall & Gran translates Pine and Spruce. There are lots of them in our part of Sweden, lots and lots of them!
